How to Advance in Salary

There are 6 salary grades:

    Bachelor's Degree

    Bachelor's Degree + 15 semester hours (22.5 quarter hours)

    Master's or Bachelor's + 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours)

    Master's Degree + 15 semester hours (22.5 quarter hours)

    Master's Degree + 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours)

    Master's Degree + 45 semester hours (67.5 quarter hours)

A word of caution! Make sure those graduate courses, particularly above a Master's level, are in the subject area that you teach or part of an educational plan approved by your dean. The best advice is to get approval from the Dean in your area before taking the courses. In addition, the course work must be in the advanced degree.

For example, continuing education courses to keep a certification current would not apply. Each year a deadline is set for submission of transcripts for that year. This is usually October 31. Paperwork needs to be sent to the Human Resource Office. This would be the application and original transcripts (not faxes). It is best to check that the transcripts have arrived and are in order. The Salary Grade Committee reviews the paperwork, recommends those persons for advancement, and it is then submitted to the Board of Trustees. No matter when the Board approves the advancement, pay is always retroactive.

The Board of Trustees awards tenure on the basis of faculty competence.  Since faculty competence can be general and vague, the CCC chapter of the AAUP has provided some tips and information to illustrate the expertise of the profession.  It can be a very stressful process, but preparing well and getting used to the idea of telling people what good things you are doing can make it easier. Asking questions and keeping informed are great tools as well.
